Jimmy Pike by Materialised

Jimmy Pike was a Walmajarri Aboriginal artist who loved to draw and paint his stories and observations. Born east of Japingka, The Great Sandy Desert, he grew up as a hunter-gatherer and eventually joined relatives to work as a stockman. It was at a cattle station that he was given the name Jimmy Pike.

Jimmy learned to use Western art materials while in Fremantle Prison and had work exhibited in Major Australian galleries even before his release. Jimmy’s diverse art practice included painting, printmaking, textile design and illustration. Licensing his imagery to Desert Designs, Pike became a fashion sensation not only in Australia but also Japan, America and Europe.

In his will, Jimmy provided for a Trust to be set up to receive future earnings from the application of his designs under license. The Trust has provided funds for annual scholarships for Aboriginal artists to attend printmaking workshops. Through the Jimmy Pike Trust, Jimmy’s creative legacy continues to contribute to the rich tapestry of Australian storytelling and traditional art practices.
